FAQs

Do you travel?

I will travel anywhere in New England for onsite chainsaw carvings and power sculptures, there may be additional fees depending distance and lodging

What do you carve?

Anything and everything! If you have an idea I will execute it to the best of my ability

This was all done with a chainsaw?

It starts with chainsaw and is taken 90% or more of the way with the saw. I finish with grinders, sanders, torches, chisels and whatever it takes to make the best piece possible.

What’s the best spot for my carving?

It's recommended to keep them outside in a shady area if possible while the carving finishes drying. It helps to minimize cracking in the piece. Direct sunlight or dry heat of indoors can speed the drying process and can cause larger cracks.

Do you fix cracks?

It's hard to plan for cracks, carvings are done with green logs and will crack or check while drying. I recommend embracing and incasing cracks, most the time they add character to the carvings and let you enjoy the material for what it is.. A fresh coat of sealer will protect the carving. If repair is desired it can be done for an additional fee, or be solved with some simple repairs, see the Carving Care section of the site. If a crack causes structural issues it can be repaired for free if brought to my shop.

Can you do other carvings? Mantels, doors, railings, fences, benches, tables, carports, arbors, wedding arches, gondolas?

If you have a wood working project or specialty project in mind I'm happy to help!

What are your carvings made of?

I mainly use white pine from my property for my custom orders in my shop. It's less prone to cracking and checking than other hard wood varieties and is a beautiful canvas. If you want a certain variety of wood it might take longer to source and a higher fee. I also do ice sculptures! Other options of materials such as kiln dried wood, foam, epoxies, or alternative mediums can be commissioned for additional costs. If you have an idea for an alternative sculpture or installation feel free to message with details or questions.

How do I care for my carving?

Please see the Carving Care section under the menu for an expanded version of these recommendations:

It's recommended to coat your carving atleast once a year, before winter or before summer, or as needed. Just as you would maintain any exterior wood. I recommend sealing the carving with either the penetrating oil used in the process of your carving, which I can tell you exactly which I used to create yours, or a speaker such as thinned spar urethane.

Its best to keep carvings up off the ground to avoid premature weathering from ground water and to allow for moisture to escape the carving.

It's recommended to keep the carving in a shady location if possible to allow it to dry slowly and minimize cracking and checking.

How long will it take?

It depends on the project and how far out I am booked. I've had one day projects and one month projects.

What are your prices?

Depends on size, details, subject matter, and scope of the project. In shop commissions start around 150-250$ a foot up to about 7 ft in height, beyond that staging is required and can be more around 200-300 a foot.

Onsite carving prices depend on wood variety, height, diameter, staging requirements, location, ease of access and estimated time required.
